The American Heart Association designed the BLS for Healthcare Providers Course to give a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely, and effective manner.
The instructor is a key element in the course. The course structure ensures that instructors can focus their attention on observing the students carefully, giving feedback, and guiding students’ acquisition of skills. Although video instruction provides the framework for the BLS for Healthcare Providers Course, the instructor helps coach the students and facilitates the Healthcare Provider Course.
The AHA encourages instructors to tailor the BLS for Healthcare Providers Course to meet audience-specific needs. For example, if instructors are giving a course to staff at a children’s hospital, they might want to include extra practice time on infant manikins.
